Camlin River Footbridge

Galvanised Zinc Coating Delivers a Sustainable and Maintenance-Free Structure into the Future

Camlin River Footbridge, Longford County Council

As part of an urban regeneration initiative, Longford County Council commissioned a new footbridge to span the river Camlin between the Council Offices in Great Water Street and the Albert Reynolds Peace Park on The Mall, Longford. The council intention was to improve the recreational amenity of Longford Town Centre and connect the commercial Town Centre to the main amenity area of parkland running alongside the river Camlin.

Spanning a wide stretch of water, in a country with long, wet winters, corrosion resistance and long life were key considerations for this project. Sperrin Galvanisers were able to offer the optimum solution with a galvanised zinc coating delivering a sustainable and maintenance – free structure into the future.

The Camlin River Bridge was designed by Kenny Lyons architects in a unique curved steel ‘Bow’ design and fabricated by Shevlin Engineering in Mayo to Class 3 EN1090 standard.

Hot Dip Galvanising to ISO 1461:2009

At 20M length and 5.3M width it posed many challenges in terms of fabrication, galvanising and transportation.

Sperrin Galvanisers advised the contractor on the optimal design for galvanising to ISO 1461:2009 standard and the bridge components were galvanised in the Sperrin Galvanisers facility in Tynagh, Co. Galway in October 2017. The components were then returned to Shevlin Engineering for painting before the entire bridge was assembled into a single piece prior to transport to site in January 2018. Transportation of this large structure was a specialist task completed by Whitten Transport.

Under the watchful eye of John Killian of Killian Consulting Engineers, the entire bridge was lifted into position over the River Camlin in February 2018 and was an immediate welcome addition to the recreational amenity of Longford Town. The bridge is open to pedestrians 24 Hours a Day and is becoming a focal point for individuals and walking groups enjoying the town of Longford in the upcoming Summer of 2018 !
