Hot Dip Galvanised Coating Comfortably Assured and Exceeded 50 Years Lifespan For The Páirc Uí Chaoimh Barriers.
Páirc Uí Chaoimh Stadium, Cork
Páirc Uí Chaoimh is the newly renovated home of Cork GAA. Originally built in 1974, the stadium required considerable updating to meet the requirements of modern stadium design. After a €100M redevelopment from 2015 to 2017, this state of the art facility now has a capacity of 45,000 people. The stadium hosts top level GAA matches, concerts and is further equipped with 1500 square metres of flexible conference space. The redeveloped stadium incorporates 4 dressing rooms with underfloor heating, physio, warm-up, drug-testing, referee, and first aid rooms.
O’Sullivan Fabrications Ltd. were tasked with the fabrication of the terrace steel barriers as well as the steel support for the scoreboard. The design brief included a terrace design life of at least 50 years and terrace barrier lifespan of at least 25 years. Malachy Walsh & Partners had overall responsibility for barrier design and layout and specified Hot Dip Galvanising to EN 1461 standard. The C3 Urban Inland/Mild Coastal environment in the Cork area meant that a typical 85-micron coating by Sperrin Galvanisers in our Hot Dip Galvanising Bath in Tynagh, Galway would comfortably exceed this deign lifespan even with an expected wear rate of 1 micron per year.
Tough Coating and Complete Anti-Corrosion Coverage
In addition to the environmental effects, the barriers and railings will also withstand the abrasive effects of many thousands of excited spectators every year. The galvanised coating on all the steelwork provides a tough, smooth, seamless surface capable of withstanding multiple knocks and scratches as fans enter and leave the stadium. The internal and external surfaces of the steel are coated with the same thickness of zinc thus ensuring that both internal and external surfaces and crevices are protected and remain free of corrosion throughout their lifespan.
The original Páirc Uí Chaoimh was developed in 1974 and saw 40 years of memorable matches before the redevelopment of the new stadium commenced in 2015. The use of galvanised steel ensures that as future terraces are remodeled, the old structures can be removed and sustainably reused in any reconfigured arrangements. This ensures that the steel terraces are durable, maintenance free as well as sustainable throughout their lifespan.
The new stadium boasts two new stands facing East & West, while to the North and South terrace stands have been installed with each terrace having a capacity of 12,000 spectators. Páirc Uí Chaoimh is the first stadium in Ireland to meet the requirements of BSEN 13200:2012 for stadium spectator facilities and a key design requirement is that all 45,000 spectators can be evacuated in 6.5minutes.
