Scotch Hall
Galvacoat and laser technology give cutting edge to Scotch Hall
Sisks customised quay side railings for their major retail development Scotch Hall in Drogheda. This has 25,000 square metres of shopping space with over 50 units. Collaboration between the architects and construction engineers from SISK, resulted in a design that was pleasing to the eye while remaining sustainable, functional and cost-effective.
The architect had a basic design of how the railing would look aesthetically. This was then converted from a concept into an actual detailed fabrication from a working drawing. The railings slope backwards to prevent people overhanging the sea wall.
The Galvacoat factor
After fabrication, the railings were then shot-blasted to roughen the surface. This increases the zinc pick-up by about 50% in the galvanizing process giving the steel even greater protection. The architect wanted white railings so after hot-dip galvanizing they were also painted them with Galvacoat. This is a unique, revolutionary two-pack polyurethane paint specially formulated to adhere to freshly galvanized steel. It is the only approved paint available for this purpose and has successfully eliminated the need for etch primers.
